Important Tips to Keep Your Basement Safe Against Intruders

You want to keep your family safe and your home secure, so you probably make sure to lock your doors and windows every night. But there are other ways to get into your home that are less obvious. That’s why it’s important to keep your basement safe against intruders.

Basements can be an easy point of entry for intruders. Basement windows are usually located in dark areas of the home that are less visible. Basement windows that are close to the ground are easily accessible while also being hidden from view.

1. Keep Valuables Out of View

One way to keep your basement safe against intruders is to remove any temptation for a burglar to come inside. If you have expensive or valuable items in plain sight, you may be tempting fate. Instead, keep them in an area that cannot be viewed from any windows or doors in your home.

2. Increase Visibility

While you may not be able to make your basement windows an area with high-traffic, you can do a few things to increase visibility. Adding motion-activated lights near your basement windows and doors will deter any intruders from trying to gain access to your home.
Another way to increase the visibility around your basement windows or doors is to keep shrubbery at a minimum. Plant low-profile plants around your windows or be sure to stay on top of the trimming.

3. Add a Windowell Cover

While adding bars to your basement windows will help increase the security of your home, it is not a very attractive option. By adding a window well cover, you can get an attractive addition to your home while also getting the security that comes from having bars on your windows. When you buy a window well cover from Windowell Expressions, you can choose from both a standard window well cover, or a clear window well cover. Both offer added security for your basement. By locking securely from the inside, you can rest easy knowing intruders won’t be able to gain access to your home through the basement. But you’ll still have the option of getting out of the basement in case of an emergency!

4. Use Security Film

Often times intruders will simply break the glass in your windows or doors, reach in, and unlock the door or window. One thing you can do to slow them down is to add a security film to the glass. While the glass can still break, instead of shattering and falling way the security film will keep the glass in place. In many cases, this will be enough of a deterrent to scare off intruders. At the very least, it may slow them down enough that they may not be able to gain access to your home!
