How to Waterproof Your Basement

Water where it’s not supposed to be is never a good sign, especially when it comes to your basement. It’s already darker down there; add water and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

There are a few ways to ensure that you keep your basement sealed tight, which is important to do if you want to avoid unnecessary repair costs and potentially devastating damage to your home. Prevention is the best approach so get started with these tips on how to waterproof your basement.

Tip #1. Find and Fill Cracks or Holes

If you have any cracks or holes in your concrete walls or floor, you’re going to want to start there and get the most obvious entry points for water taken care of first. Walk around our basement, removing everything from off the walls so that you can see every inch of the wall. Really get to know your basement and find any cracks or holes. Mark them off as you go so you don’t miss any after your inspection is complete. Once you’ve found your areas for repair, begin by filling the holes or cracks with hydraulic cement. Don’t forget where these holes or cracks are and continue to monitor them, especially after a heavy rainstorm or when snow fall is melting.

Tip #2. Seal

If you’re basement is prone to water even after you’ve fixed individual holes, you may want to consider applying a coat of waterproof masonry cement to your basement walls. This will be an added layer of protection and help to seal up your home.

Tip #3. Check Outside

To waterproof your basement, you’re going to have to spend some time outside of your home. One way to avoid getting water in your basement is to keep as much water away as possible. Check your gutters and downspouts, they should be clear and clean.  If not, you need to clean them out as soon as possible. In fact, regularly cleaning your gutters and downspouts should be a regular part of your home maintenance checklist. Doing this will ensure that water moves away from your home properly and has no opportunity to get into your basement.

Tip #4. Rework The Landscape

If you have problems with water pooling in your yard, you’ll want to address this issue and help the water to drain away from your home. You may be able to do this yourself with a little research, or it may require the expertise of a professional landscaper.

Tip #5. Keep Window Wells Clear

Your window well provides your basement with extra light, keeping it warmer and brighter, but it can also help with waterproofing. Your window well has a built-in drainage system that will keep water from getting too close to your window or seeping in side. Let your window well work for you by keeping it clear of debris, which can block the drainage system.
